Aquaox Expands EU-Approved HOCl Portfolio with New PT2, PT4 and PT5 Biocidal Product Family
Another important milestone for Aquaox and our ECA technology
Aquaox is pleased to announce an important expansion of our European regulatory position for Electrochemically Activated (ECA) water and hypochlorous acid (HOCl) based disinfection products.
As of 4 August 2026, the biocidal product family “ECA Disinfect Product family 5” has received Union Authorisation under the European Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR – Regulation (EU) No 528/2012).
The authorisation, EU-0036247-0000, covers products based on active chlorine released from hypochlorous acid and is valid throughout the European Union from 4 August 2026 until 31 July 2036.
Aquaox/ACS is included within the authorised product family as an approved manufacturer and production site. This enables us, subject to the conditions and specifications of the authorisation, to manufacture and supply compliant ECA/HOCl products as ready-to-use bottled or packaged biocidal products.
Three important areas of application
The new authorisation covers three important Biocidal Product Types:
PT2 – Disinfectants and algaecides not intended for direct application to humans or animals
This category includes disinfection applications for surfaces, materials, equipment and other areas where effective microbiological control is required.
PT4 – Food and feed area
PT4 is particularly important for the food and beverage industry. It covers disinfection in areas associated with the production, transport, storage or consumption of food and feed.
This provides an important regulatory basis for Aquaox solutions used in food-processing environments, including applications where hygienic control of surfaces, equipment and production environments is critical.
PT5 – Drinking water
PT5 covers products intended for the disinfection of drinking water.
This expands the possibilities for Aquaox to provide regulated HOCl-based solutions for drinking-water applications across European markets, subject to the specific use conditions and applicable national drinking-water requirements.
Active chlorine released from hypochlorous acid
The active substance within the authorised product family is active chlorine released from hypochlorous acid (HOCl).
Hypochlorous acid can be produced through Electrochemical Activation (ECA), using water, salt and electricity. Aquaox has specialised for many years in developing ECA generators and complete disinfection solutions for industrial, food-processing, water-treatment and other professional applications.
The new authorisation strengthens our ability to offer customers two complementary approaches:
On-site generation – Aquaox ECA systems produce the disinfectant directly at the customer’s facility, reducing the need to transport and store conventional disinfectant chemicals.
Ready-to-use products – Aquaox can now also manufacture and supply products falling within the authorised ECA product family as bottled or packaged solutions, in accordance with the approved formulations, labels, applications and conditions of use.
This combination allows us to select the most appropriate solution depending on application, consumption volume, infrastructure and customer requirements.
Building on our existing hand-disinfection portfolio
The PT2, PT4 and PT5 authorisation is an important addition to our existing regulatory portfolio.
Aquaox already has access to an approved ECA product family for PT1 – human hygiene, providing a regulatory basis for non-medical hand-disinfection products.
Together, these authorisations significantly broaden the range of applications that Aquaox can support with compliant ECA/HOCl products:
- PT1: Human hygiene / non-medical hand disinfection
- PT2: General surface and environmental disinfection
- PT4: Food and feed area disinfection
- PT5: Drinking-water disinfection
This creates a strong regulatory platform for supplying both on-site generated ECA solutions and ready-to-use packaged HOCl products across multiple professional markets.
European Union Authorisation until 2036
The European Commission granted the Union authorisation through Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1692 of 13 July 2026.
The authorisation is valid from 4 August 2026 through 31 July 2036, providing a long-term regulatory framework for the authorised products.
The official documentation also explicitly lists ACS B.V. in the Netherlands as one of the manufacturers and manufacturing sites for the ECA Disinfect Product family 5.
For Aquaox, this is an important step in the continued professionalisation and international expansion of our ECA product portfolio.
From on-site generation to ready-to-use HOCl solutions
Aquaox has traditionally focused strongly on on-site ECA generation, allowing customers to produce fresh hypochlorous acid where and when it is required.
With the expansion of our authorised product portfolio, we can increasingly combine this technology with ready-to-use bottled and packaged products.
This gives customers and distribution partners greater flexibility. Smaller users can benefit from ready-to-use products, while larger industrial users can generate the required solution directly on site using an Aquaox ECA generator.
The objective remains the same: providing effective and practical disinfection solutions based on ECA technology while meeting the increasingly stringent European requirements governing biocidal products.
